Gentle Wisdom from a Good Dog

This week’s insight comes from an unexpected place—and one of the hardest I’ve ever had to experience.

My little companion Clark, a King Charles Cavalier who had been with me for 15 ½ years, passed two weeks ago. His decline wasn’t sudden—he faded slowly over several years until, as a final act of love and mercy, we made the impossibly difficult decision to put him to sleep. Fortunately, we were able to plan and fully celebrate his last few days with us. (And yes, Clark most certainly got to taste chocolate!)

He was more than a pet—he was part of me. A beloved member of our family. A constant. A quiet presence during moments of joy and uncertainty alike.

Clark wasn’t just around for the milestones. He was threaded through the entire fabric of our family’s life.

He was there when we brought our first child home from the hospital, sniffing curiously at this tiny new arrival. He was underfoot at every meal, eagerly waiting to clean the floor. He had favorite visitors, barked at rabbits, made celebrity appearances during Zoom meetings, and managed to simultaneously terrify and charm the neighborhood kids. He loved food, adored a warm lap, and moved through our lives with the kind of quiet consistency you don’t truly appreciate until it’s gone.

Losing him has left me reflecting deeply the past two weeks on what he taught me—lessons I never realized I was receiving in real time.

The best teachers don't always speak.

Clark never led a meeting, never drafted a strategy, never said a word. But he taught a masterclass in the things that matter:

  • Unconditional loyalty that never wavered, even when I was distracted or distant.
  • The wisdom of presence, simply being there, without needing to fix or impress.
  • Love without performance, offered freely, quietly, and without condition.

We spend much of our lives trying to be better partners, better leaders, better parents. We seek out books, coaching, frameworks.

But Clark just was.

A model of consistency, warmth, and steady love. His presence shaped our family in ways I took for granted and am only now fully realizing.

When that kind of presence disappears, you begin to see just how much it held you together. His greatest gift wasn’t just the love he gave, but the way he gave it: without agenda, without effort, without needing anything in return.

It’s the kind of presence we aspire to but often struggle to embody. Clark did it effortlessly. And that, I think, is his legacy.

Some of life’s most enduring lessons are revealed in moments of heartbreak. Not because pain is inherently wise, but because grief strips away the noise and reveals what truly mattered all along.

The next time we’re racing through our day or trying to “perform” care or leadership—pause.

Be present.

Show up without an agenda.

The most meaningful impact may not come from what we say or do, but from how we simply are with others.

Pass It Forward

Know someone who shows up quietly, consistently, and with heart? Tell them how much it means. It might be the reminder or recognition they didn’t know they needed.

And if you have an animal companion who’s been that steady presence in your life, take a moment today to let them know, too—whether it’s an extra treat, a longer walk, or just a quiet thank-you.

Here's to steady footsteps, soft hearts, and the quiet teachers among us.

The Quiet Driver Behind High-Performing Teams Over the past few months, I’ve had a number of conversations with advancement leaders who keep circling the same essential question: “What makes a MarComm team truly high-performing?” Not just competent. Not just creative. But consistently impactful. And while there are always important nuances—culture, chemistry, capacity, experience, resources—one attribute comes up every time: Clarity. Clarity of purpose.Clarity of expectations.Clarity of...

More Money, Fewer Donors A recent data drop from the AFP's Fundraising Effectiveness Project made me pause—and maybe it should make you pause, too. It confirms what many of us have sensed for a while: giving continues to trend up, but loyalty is shrinking. The dollars may look good in a fiscal year-end or president's report. But beneath them is a quieter story—an erosion of trust, connection, and commitment. This really clicked during a run on Monday while listening to a podcast about the...
